Chapter 6: Days of Bliss, Part 15
Prelude to a surprising friendship
He was a hero. He was a warrior. He was a leader.          People often speak of some men as "born leaders". He would never have agreed with such a statement, because he was a leader of his own right and of his own making.          That he knew.
He would die only 52 years of age, but his military successes and his fame should last for centuries:          Nearly eighty years after his death, a life-size sculpture of him would find its place at one of the corners of the gallery of the great men of Prussia, part of the equestrian statue of Friedrich the Great at the central national boulevard in Berlin. Only the four most excellent cavalry men were honored that way and even in the 21st century this monument would tell of his outstanding courage and work.          Two hundred forty-eight years after his birth, a modern state would erect a casern in the city he was born and that casern would bear his name. And almost three hundred years later prospective officers would choose his name as the name of their class. They would do so not only to honor his cold blooded courage and his tactics, which became a landmark in the history of military art, but also his revolutionary modern ideas on how to train and how to treat soldiers.           That he would never know.
Danger was his life's elixir. He loved horses, adventures, alcohol, tobacco and ... women. Just in that order.          Everyone who had ever met him knew that.
The afflictions and losses his family suffered during his childhood were many. He lost his father, a respected major of the cavalry, when he was just 7 years old. His mother had to move with him and his siblings to the far east of the country. There he grew up in the next few years under poor and cramped conditions. But at least he could go to school. The hard times, he and his family went trough had not prevented him from pursuing his goals with great determination.          At the age of thirteen he was called to the court of the Margrave. The time there was hard and the separation from his family was painful. But here he met his first love: horses. At the age of nineteen, he became cornet of a Cuirassier-Regiment due to his extraordinary good riding skills and his dealings with these animals. In his first position, again he was confronted with hardship and distress. The colonel to whom he was subordinate tried to make life difficult and miserable for him in every possible way. But even now he was not discouraged.

For the first time he showed his exceptional skills on a battlefield at the age of twenty-one. Only sixteen years later, at the age of only thirty-seven, he became the youngest major general of the army and the most hailed commander of the cavalry of his country. In the same year, he would be awarded with the Pour le Mérite [1], the highest honor for constant bravery his country could grant him. And only a few months later he would receive an even greater honor for his successful operations. Still on the battlefield and wounded, he would be knighted and receive the highest order of his country, the Star of the Black Eagle [2], directly from the hand of his King.          In contrast to other regiments which carried the new motto of Friederich II -  "Pro Gloria et Patria" [3] - on their standards, the standard of his regiment would continue to carry a standard with the motto of Frederick I - "Nec Soli Cedit" [4] -.

As commander of the cavalry, he would expand this part of the Prussian army into a combat machine which was to make the decisive contribution to the victory of Prussia in the battles of Rossbach and Zorndorf and so saved the Kingdom in a very crucial time. Formerly underestimated and despised, his name now should cause fear in the hearts of his enemies and admiration in the hearts of all others: Friedrich Wilhelm Free Lord von Seydlitz-Kurzbach.
But at this time, these greatest successes were still ahead of him. After the second Silesian war in 1748 had been terminated by peace treaties, Major Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz returned with his squadron to the Silesian city of Trebnitz. Every soldier knew that this peace would last only a few years and a new war would begin soon. So von Seydlitz would use the following years of peace, to build an even stronger cavalry and train it for war. He developed very flexible cavalry tactics and assembled a plan on tactical form and training for the Prussian cavalry. He then presented it to the King and Frederick II approved the procedures. However, the new Prussian cavalry had to be supplied with new horses with special characteristics. In 1732 King Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia founded the 'königliche Trakehner Stutamt' [5] in Trakehnen, a royal estate in East-Prussia and started the breeding of the famous Trakehner horses. In 1739 the king gave the estate as a gift to crown prince Friedrich II. Under his leadership the breeding would flourish. East Prussian farmers were encouraged to bring their mares, by then known for their hardiness and quality, to Trakehnen's stallions. This enabled the rapid transformation of the breed into much sought-after army remounts: sure-footed, intelligent and athletic. At the height of its existence 60.000 mares per year were bred to East Prussian stallions. But in 1749 such breeding results were still far off.

That was one reason why at the end of August 1749 Major Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz was on his way from Trebnitz, where he was stationed, to Potsdam. The King himself had ordered him to come.
Whenever he was in the city, the Major took a room in his usual inn. He reached Potsdam at five o'clock in the afternoon, took his luggage to his room, and had dinner afterwards. He would have liked to have a drink with the other soldiers present there. Also a little game of cards to make some extra money would have been nice, but the audience at Sans Souci the next morning demanded his whole alertness and attention. A great part of his success was based on his discipline, which also now was in effect. So he drank just a single mug of wine that evening and kept away from the card-playing soldiers. Then he handed over his parade uniform to the wife of the innkeeper for ironing and ordered the barber to be at his service at seven o'clock the next morning. The Royal Audience was scheduled for ten o'clock. The ride to the Palace of Sans Souci would take at least half an hour and since he wanted to be there half an hour before the appointment, he had to go to at 9 o'clock. Unpunctuality would have been impolite in every state, but here in Prussia it was a crime. So von Seydlitz went to his room, read the report which he was to present to the King the following morning once again, and then went to bed.          It is not known whether Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz was dreaming that night. But he certainly did not dream of meeting - just a week later - a Scot, who shared his passion for horses and freedom. Even less he was aware that he would be the tool to free this Scots from one of his worst demons. [6]

CHAPTER 12 aka “Stop n’ Shop 2: Electric Boogaloo”
SPOILERS are sprinkled around extremely liberally for The Property of Hate
Masterpost here
Tumblr media
This one might just be my favorite 4th wall lean in the entire comic honestly
This page in general man. RGB you have UTTERLY failed in the “don’t get attached” department. That’s your child now and you just gotta accept it
(squints at Miss Cell-Any’s) (says it out loud) … >:|
Also …is Cell named Cell because it sounds like ‘sell’ and she sells things? fuck
There has to be a carousel pun in here somewhere and I am not yet grasping it. My third eye isn’t open wide enough
Cell keeps on snagging fabric onto her quills lmao
Tumblr media
… is her face a pencil
Tumblr media
WELP alright, Assok confirmed for the Hero just before, uh, Hero
Tailor is the Fashion Police
Gotta appreciate Cell and Tailor speaking in my personal favorite color, porble. Cell is spikey with quills, while Tailor is deeper purple and shaped like a flag/fabric
Something tells me Tailor and Julienne would get along excellently, to RGB’s dismay
I like how Tinker’s another composite character like Melody- he’s got hammers, awls, and crowbars for feet/hands and rulers/drills for legs. His arms are saw and his head is a plier
On that note how do his sleeves not get shredded?
The puns. The puns, this entire chapter is an overdose of puns
Tumblr media
“Rabbits foot” har har
Now… that’s interesting
We saw with Watcher that RGB’s traded hand morphed to fit his aesthetic and body immediately. Here, the rabbits foot certainly transforms to become the hand RGB needs, but its color remains. Considering RGB is able to change his colors at will, and does so to his shirt a few pages later, this means the foot hasn’t, like, fully integrated. Like a new organ rejecting him
actually, in light of this entire chapter RGB entire OUTFIT is weird. His pants and sleeves are constantly rolled up because he’s short, but wouldn’t they have adjusted to fit RGB’s body? You could argue that this is just RGB’s aesthetic and he likes it this way, but now we find out that treating your clothes like this is bad and even detrimental to your safety. And there is NO WAY RGB would purposefully compromise his own safety like this. Not when he KNOWS he will find himself in dangerous situations trying to get his Heroes to their journeys end. Maybe he wouldn’t need to be so reliant on nightmares to counter Fears if he had better amour
In fact the only clothing (outside of shoes/suspenders/gloves) that seem to fit RGB perfectly is his jacket, the outermost layer and presumably his most potent amour. As far as I can tell it is well tailored BUT I don’t know anything about suit fittings so its possible its ALSO not fitted well to him
He certainly wasn’t keen to let Cell & Co know he’d been wrinkling his shirt something awful, so he knows what he’s doing. Theoretically, if RGB was purposefully sabotaging his outfits ability to protect him… why? What could be more important?
Yeah okay and the rabbit foot is also a “caught red-handed pun”
Going through modmads asks on her tumblr, her answer to someone asking if Hero/RGB would ever wear a dress or skirt: “Of course he would, he just has very particular taste and there might be other complications but we’ll get to that”
GODDAMNIT THE CAROUSEL PUN IS THEY’RE PUTTING THE [—–] THE CARE-O’-CELL
Aww, love and care are what makes clothes into amour, which is also French for… love. I didn’t actually read it right until now, I always assumed it was armour. That’s a whole extra letter, dumbass. it didn’t help that Hero heard RGB say the word and thought “KNIGHT ARMOUR” so this was… on purpose on modmads part damn her.
Tumblr media
The audio in my head for this page is the Mii shop theme with the occasional bloodcurdling scream
On that note why can’t RGB take his shirt off for ironing? Is he physically unable to? Or is Tailor just doing it this way for maximum petty revenge. Ironing just a little hotter and harder than she technically needs to? For his own good of course!
Also his scream-text is dripping up a little, like, oh I don’t know, a certain negadark TV head we’re acquainted with. I know its water+vents=Neggy and this effect is mostly for conveying SHEER BLOODCURDLING PAIN AND VOLUME bc RGB is a bastard baby boy, but. Could you imagine RGB kicking up such an incredible fuss that Negative shows up just to check on things anyway??
Tumblr media
Ok MEANWHILE, Hero’s jumper adjusts to her instantly- you can actually see it gaining an outline here to match the rest of her!
“it becomes you very well” this section of the comic probably has the highest pun concentration of the lot and i’m >:|
omgfds the INSTANT Cell is like “huh that’s like how Madras wears” Heros like I LOVE IT
Tumblr media
Assok using Melofy’s sforzando as a noise of distress o no
Hero wanted to show RGB her outfit and RGB complimenting it fsggafjkgdffff
RGB’s struggle with sleeves is the exact same one I have with pants. THEY’RE ALWAYS TOO DANG LONG
Tumblr media
In another world where RGB didn’t whisk Tailor away to another reality to ultimately get trapped and torn apart they would be BEST FRENEMIES. Just having dumb fun at each others expense with puns
Tumblr media
Hero gets in his personal space bubble to fix his problem and he just! Lets her! No comment, no shying away, he lets her and he leans in to give her better access once he realizes what she’s doing and he THANKS HER. This is truly the most blessed of sequences and my heart is so full
First a rabbit foot, now horseshoes- honestly, im on board with plying RGB with all the luck-affecting objects one can possibly think of. The guy isn’t Gladstone Gander, he DEFINITELY needs all the luck he can get
On wearing wood shoes to get through the elastic valley- at first I was like ?? bc we KNOW Nothing is stronger than trees, but we later see that their shoes, RGB’s wooden horsehoes especially, get worn down and chipped. That its meant as a TEMPORARY measure to get them through and not a permanent protection makes more sense
Tumblr media
RGB is doing the most DADLIEST of DAD POSES HERE. Look at this guy! Smiling genuinely, open body language, offering to carry Hero’s beloved galoshes for her. (bangs fists on table to the rhythm of DAD DAD DAD)
click next to see RGB get nails jammed into his feet, as you do

Best places to take your dog to in Kansas City this fall
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With cooler temperatures finally here, it’s now the perfect time to take the dog out for a nice evening stroll. Some dogs really hate the heat — and their owners don’t want to walk in it either. Fall is prime time to stretch your legs.
Kansas City has a wide range of parks, public spaces, and hotels that cater to dogs’ needs. Whether you are new to the area or have lived here your whole life, this article will help guide you to finding the best experiences for your loyal canine.
The specialty hangout spot for dogs is in the River Market area. Bar K Dog Bar gives dogs the chance to hang out and play with other pups; meanwhile, their owners get the chance to make new friends and grab some coffee or a beer. The popular park is located on the shore of the Missouri River in Berkley Riverfront Park, under the Heart of America Bridge.
Bar K is open 9:00am to 10:00pm daily serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner to both humans and dogs. The menu includes items like: chicken tenders, deviled eggs, steak bowls, macaroni and cheese, salads, white bean chili, fresh baked cookies, and Betty Rae’s ice cream. Dogs can also be treated to beef stew, chicken risotto, ice cream nuggets, and turkey bacon jerky. Selections for dogs are on a different menu.
Anyone without a dog is welcome to visit Bar K for free. Pups need either a membership or guess pass to enter. Bar K also has private event spaces where you can hold dog friendly meetings, birthdays, fundraisers, and more. There is the nearby River Market Dog Park, which is free. The River Market has a myriad of restaurants with outdoor seating where you can relax with your dog while eating some grub.
Ermine Case Junior Park is also near Bar K. Not as many people use the area. It’s a small park with a good view of the  river. Case Park is south of Ninth Street to Tenth Street on Jefferson Street. It is adjacent to West Terrace Park.
In the Westport area, Mo Brew has open patio seating in its outside bar. Dog owners are welcome to bring their pup. Mo Brew is located on 39th street. It features rare craft beers, and a cheap happy hour menu — $1.50 burgers and $1.50 fries from 3:00pm to 7:00pm Monday thru Friday.
Kaldi’s has two locations in the Country Club Plaza. Kaldi’s is a great stop for coffee and a place for your dog to rest. Both locations have outdoor seating.
West Bottoms is open to walkers and their dogs. Most of the antique shop owners are cool with pups. The area gets extra foot-traffic during First Fridays.
Marshalls actually lets you shop with your dog. The store has a wide selection of dog treats, clothing, and toys.
Shawnee Mission Park includes a large off-leash dog area. There is also a lake where your dog is free to swim. The park has a beach, boat and kayak rentals, and several trails. It’s an excellent place for relaxation and recreation.
The Pet Ranch Dog Park is located off 151st and Olathe. The park has 13 acres of free land for canines to roam. It is an exclusive dog park costing $35 a month. The park features a dog pond and an agility course.
For those looking for an urban dog park: head to  Swope Park or Loose Park just south of the Country Club Plaza and Penn Valley Park. Jackson County’s Longview Lake Park is an ideal location for fishing, camping, and hiking. Penn Valley Park and Swope Park have off-leash sections.
Other dog parks in the metro include: West Terrace Dog Park in Downtown KC and Waggin’ Trail Off Leash Dog Park in North Kansas City.
Leafwood Dog Park has lots of grassy space, and a charming wood-fenced area. It is well maintained, has water-hosing stations, and nine whole yards. It’s a little bit of a walk to actually get to the park.
Crestview Park in the Northland has a new jungle gym and woods all along it. There is also a creek. It’s a kid friendly park.
The Trolley Trail through Brookside and Waldo is a winding track that brings in people from all walks of life along with their pets.
Tails and Trails is in Grandview. It has lots of open space and a water fountain.
Dogs are also welcome in some parts of the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Dogs must be on a leash; they are restricted to the mulch paths or the International Sculpture Trail around the Pavilion.
For the perfect picnic spot, head to the lawn of the The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The lawn has a walk-through maze and the iconic, larger-than-life Shuttlecocks.
Maple Woods Natural Area in Gladstone is a great place to get some exercise, hike, and walk the dog. It’s also a spot known for wildlife and bird watching. It’s secretly tucked between a neighborhood and a highway. There are several hiking paths, making each visit unique. This is also a great place to see the leaves change color this fall. The area gives people an idea of what the north Kansas City area looked like before people settled here and buildings took over the skyline.
If you’re willing to take a longer drive, Kill Creek Streamway has a lovely off-leash dog park. The view there is spectacular. The park isn’t well-known unless you live in De Soto. The park has a stream as well as bridges for dogs to explore. Those who love walking outside with their dog should definitely check out this nature spot.
Hotels and lodging for dogs
Traveling with a furry companion can be stressful. It’s not always easy to find a dog friendly hotel. Several of Kansas City’s hotels offer pet-friendly accommodations including: The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center; Hotel Indigo – Downtown; Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center; Ambassador Hotel Kansas City; Intercontinental Kansas City at the Plaza; and Residence Inn Kansas City Downtown/Convention Center, and 21c Museum Hotel.
Airbnb also has several different listings that are dog friendly. From condos, duplexes, houses, lofts, and even mansions — sometimes you can find a better deal than what a hotel offers. (Although, the mansion prices are in the thousands of dollars.)
Kansas City is also home to top dog day care centers: Camp Bow Wow, Dog’s World of Fun, Pooches Paradise Daycare Resort, Pete & Mac’s Pet Resorts, Doggie Style Bowtique, and Dog Pawz.

Woodneath Library project puts historic home in spotlight | The Kansas City Star
A capital campaign to restore an historic home adjoining Woodneath Library Center in Clay County will have its public launch April 6.

“We have lived near the beautiful historic home for many years now,” said Jeremiah Morgan, who is spearheading the campaign along with his wife Rebecca and the Mid-Continent Public Library system. “We are excited to help bring this home back to its role as a unique and beautiful place for our community to create, share, and connect.”

“My parents, Edwin and Naomi, took great pride in the family farm, especially our home,” Crouch said. “We as a family are very excited to see the progress being made on its restoration and look forward to the day when it will once again be open for social and educational events as it has been for generations.”
Information on the public campaign and the Story Center is available at mystorycenter.org.

Volunteers deliver meals and also check in with seniors, who may not have family or friends watching out for them.
“It’s more than just a meal,” Creek said.
Advance registration for the run is $30 for adults, $20 for seniors and $15 for children. Same-day registration is an extra $5. Register at platteseniors.org or at Platte Senior Services, 11724 N.W. Plaza Circle, Suite 700 in Kansas City, North.

Parkville mayor visits Webelos
Webelos scouts from Parkville met with Mayor Nan Johnston in March as part of their requirements for the Building a Better World merit badge.
During her presentation, Johnston talked about how she got involved with city government and encouraged them to participate in projects to make the community a better place.
The scouts were from Webelos II Den 5 at St. Therese School.
“I spoke about the Eagle Scout project completed in 2015 that replaced the walking bridge in the Parkville Nature Sanctuary,” Johnston said in a press release. “I look forward to seeing what these scouts accomplish today and in the future.”
Northland Coalition seeks survey input
The Northland Coalition invites any adult, 18 and over, to take an online survey about the use/abuse of alcohol, marijuana, illegal drugs and prescription drugs among Northland youth.
“This brief survey will be so valuable to us,” said Laura Bruce of Tri-County Mental Health Services, which facilitates the Northland Coalition. “It will help us prioritize the communities’ concerns and inform us about how effective our current programs are.”
The survey takes 10 to 15 minutes and those who complete it will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for one of four $25 gift cards.
The online survey is available at www.northlandcoalition.com. For more information, contact Bruce at 816-877-0498 or [email protected],
Clay County announces food-service awards
Sixty food service establishments, including several schools, have received Food Excellence Awards from the Clay County Public Health Center.
The award recognizes the efforts of food employees and managers to ensure safe food for the community, said Becky Steiner, section chief for environmental health protection at the Clay County Public Health Center.
“Most food establishments in Clay County regularly meet high food safety standards,” Steiner said in a press release. “These Food Safety Excellence award recipients have made food safety a top priority, as demonstrated by top-notch inspection results during 2017.”
To see the complete list of award recipients go to www.clayhealth.com.
Environmental health protection conducted 1,376 routine food establishment inspections, 239 temporary food event inspections, and investigated 91 food-related complaints in 2017 in Clay County.
Play staged at Garrison School
A play about African-American educator Clarence Gantt will be presented at 3 p.m. on April 15 at the Garrison School Cultural Center, 502 N. Water in Liberty.
“Mr. Gantt, Modified,” tells the story of Gantt’s commitment to the education of the African-American children and youth in Liberty. He was principal for 25 years at Garrison School during the mid 1900s. After integration came to the school district, he was reassigned as a study-hall monitor at Liberty High School.
“He was quite a guy to go through what he did and keep his head up and keep reassuring us and pushing us, not in an negative way, but letting us know we can do it,” said Shelton Ponder, a former student and the creator and performer of the one-man play.
The performance is free, although donations will be accepted. For more information, call 816-429-8130.

They want the very best for her, and with a very young family to care for, giving Athena the time, attention, training and exercise she needs and very much deserves has been difficult.
